Psalm 33:3         Sing a new song to him

Have you ever noticed most men don’t like to sing worship songs at church?  I have heard people describe multiple reasons why men don’t sing:  the key of the song is too high – we don’t like singing top 40 love songs – we only like the old hymns, not the new stuff (or the opposite) – we are embarrassed by the sound of our own voice – our kids are embarrassed by the sound of our voice – it just seems weird singing songs about someone we can’t see.  You may have your own reasons.

I believe there is one reason above every other reason we might come up with.  Disobedience.

This may sound harsh, but it’s true.

In Psalm 33:3 we are given a command:  Sing!  This is not a recommendation – it is an expectation.  We are even told it should be a new song.  Yes, it literally means new.  This is not an attack against the old, it is a calling to know the Creator of all things is worth having new songs written and sung about Him. And this is not just about going through the motions of singing because Psalm 33:3 concludes with the words “a joyful shout.”

Why are we to sing?  Because praise from God’s righteous ones is beautiful to Him (Psalm 33:1).  He is perfect, trustworthy, full of unfailing love, powerful, and the Creator of all things (to name a few other reasons).

You may not normally like to sing, but let’s resolve together to make 2019 the year of men stepping up with a joyful shout of song to the One who is more than worthy of it.

New Devotionals:

A new year means new opportunities, new resolutions, and new challenges.  For some of us, a new year is just the continuation of the old year.  This post is part of a series of short devotionals I have written for Promise Keepers Canada.  Each reflection will focus on a particular Bible verse that has the word “new” in it.  I hope it will encourage you and give you some helpful perspective as we launch in to a new year.
